In 2021, the United Nations completed the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) to reach a global vision of the world living in harmony with nature by 2050.
The Framework includes four overarching goals to be achieved by 2050 and twenty-three action orientated targets to be achieved by 2030. Targets specifically relevant to the forestry and forest products value chain are:
- Target 2: Restore 30% of all degraded ecosystems
- Target 10: Enhance Biodiversity and Sustainability in Agriculture, Aquaculture, Fisheries, and Forestry
- Target 15: Businesses Assess, Disclose and Reduce Biodiversity-Related Risks and Negative Impacts
The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, outlines the strategies and action plans to conserve, sustainably use, and restore biodiversity, effectively over the next decade. Business will be required to regularly monitor, assess and disclose their risks, dependencies and impacts on biodiversity and to set targets to mitigate these impacts.
The online biodiversity tool provides a methodology that will enable the sector to assess their impacts on the biodiversity component of sustainability, set targets, measure progress and report on these in a format that will meet various national and international requirements.
Access to the online biodiversity tool is available to members of the Forestry Value Chain Forum at a nominal annual registration fee that will enable ongoing maintenance and support of the tool. Interested companies are invited to submit an application for registration.
