Forestry Value Chain Forum

Established in 2024, the Forestry Value Chain Forum is a collaborative body formed to address shared, pre-competitive challenges across the forestry and forest products sector. It serves as a platform to foster meaningful partnerships among sub-sectors and engage constructively with external stakeholders.

Coordinated by the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA), the Forum focuses on skills development, education, training, and other strategic topics. Its flexible structure allows members to introduce and pursue additional sector-relevant matters as needed.

Member representation includes:

  • PAMSA – Olga Bezuidenhout (Forum Chair)
  • Forestry South Africa (FSA) – Francois Oberholzer
  • Sawmilling South Africa (SSA) – Roy Southey
  • South African Wood Preservers Association (SAWPA) – Bruce Breedt
  • FP&M SETA – Dr Felleng Yende
  • South African Utility Pole Association (SAUPA) – Pierre Tullis
  • PG Bison – Justin Berry, representing the board sector

The Forum’s first collective initiative is the development of a Forestry Value Chain Sector Skills Plan (SSP), for which PAMSA successfully submitted a funding application to the FP&M SETA. With the application approved, implementation is now underway.

The SSP will strengthen skills planning and delivery across the value chain by:

  • Aligning training initiatives with real employment opportunities
  • Addressing scarce and critical skills requiring urgent intervention
  • Promoting cross-sector collaboration, including projects linked to the Just Energy Transition (JET)
  • Identifying emerging skill sets driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR)
  • Establishing a demand-led, industry-responsive approach to skills development

PAMSA extends its sincere thanks to Dr Felleng Yende and the FP&M SETA team for their continued support in driving this vital industry-led initiative forward.
