Upcycle your empty milk cartons and let your kids make these cute bunny-like easter baskets.

Materials:

  • Scissors, stapler, glue or double-sided tape, hole punch
  • One litre milk or juice carton with a spout
  • Construction paper (pastel colors); Pipe cleaners; Cotton ball (optional)

Instructions

  1.  Have an adult cut a panel from the carton (with the spout) and save it to later make a handle. Staple the open spout closed.
  2. Use construction paper to cover the carton (you can use glue or tape).
  3. Use the hole punch in the center of the spout ridge to create a spot where the whiskers go. Place the pipe cleaners in the holes, then glue on the googly eyes.
  4. Next, the bunny needs ears. Cut ear shapes from the same color construction paper, then cut smaller ear shapes (pink) to glue on to the middle of the ears. Staple the ears on the top of the base so that they stand up.
  5. Finally, create the handle by trimming the cut carton side, covering it with construction paper, and stapling it to the basket!
  6. Add the finishing touch of gluing a cotton ball to the tail of the bunny basket.

REMEMBER THAT MILK AND JUICE CARTONS ARE ALSO RECYCLABLE. Rinse, flatten and place with your paper recycling!

  2. Flatten the roll, and cut a half moon shape out of the front top and bottom of the roll.
  3. Attach a black strip to form the belt. About a 2cm width.
  4. Use silver cardboard and cut a buckle, glue onto belt.
  5. Cut our black dots about half a cm in diameter to form the buttons and glue onto the body.

A little while back, we stumbled across a tweet by Sarah Denton (@PisazzCreations) when she shared one of her papercutting marvels. Born in England, Sarah spent eight years of her childhood in South Africa.

Naturally we love the medium she was using so we asked her to share a little more about the art of papercutting.

1.  What brought you into the world of papercutting?

I enjoy being creative and like to try new things. I had been browsing the internet looking for new craft things to try when I came across a photograph of a papercut someone had done – so pretty and elegant. It looked really interesting and I decided to have a go myself. My first cut I did looked good but I knew I could make my lines cleaner and improve so decided to have another go. Before long I was hooked and soon began sketching more designs to try.

2.  How have ‘sharpened’ your skills and developed your style?

As with anything you want to get better at, you have to practise. And practise. And practise. The more I cut, the more I enjoyed it. My cutting became smoother and cleaner, my lines became finer and my circles smoother, although I think there is still some room for improvement on those.Photo: PisazzCreations

I spent a number of years growing up in South Africa. I love the country and the wildlife and so I have been able to combine my love for nature and animals and papercutting and this makes up a large part of my subject matter.

3.  The end results look quite intricate. How long does a piece take you on average?

It depends on the size of the cut and the amount of detail.  A 10x 8 inch animal cut usually takes about half an hour to sketch and another one to two hours to cut. A larger piece like my recent woodland cut took just over six hours to cut.

4.  Do you sell your pieces?

I do sell my work via etsy. I sell my own designs as well as taking commissions for customers’ own ideas.

5.  What brings you the most joy?

The feeling I get when someone tells me how much they love a piece or when they tell me how the person reacted when they gave it to someone as a present.

Nature is inspiring so I rarely spend time trying to decide what I can cut. Sometimes I will see something or take a photo and think I can make that into a papercut. I also love the story of Alice in Wonderland so have cut a few Alice pieces and tried to capture a bit of the fantasy side of Alice.

7.  Paper is obviously the core medium. What do you love about paper?

Paper can change the feeling of a cut. The thickness, the texture, the colour it adds to the mood and emotion you get when you look at a piece.

About Sarah:

She lives in Northampton, England with her husband Martyn, two sons Thomas and William, and two dogs.

Personalise a gift by using the recipient’s initial as part of the embellishment.

Buy a letter stencil at a hardware store and cut out the letter from scrapbooking paper. Use it against an unpatterned background so that it stands out.

We used a cardboard box for one of our gifts and green sugar paper – an affordable type of art paper – to wrap the other. Decorate your gift with matching ribbon, cord or pins.

The beauty of working with paper is that each creation can be unique. Whether it is for a birthday card, a get well card or a Valentine’s card, making your own cards, can be therapeutic and fun.

Here are five tips to get you started. The rest is all up to you.

  1. Take a trip to your local stationery shop. Buy some coloured paper and board that preferably carries a mark of certification (FSC, PEFC or SFI). This will assure you that the paper has come through a sustainable process, from the forest to production. (Don’t forget the glue, stamps and stickers)
  2. You don’t need to spend money either – hunt around the house and gather up old newspapers and magazines.
  3. Browse the internet for ideas, from origami heart envelopes to paper heart chains.
  4. Look up your favourite love poem, line from a movie or song. Print or write it out. Maybe you print a photo that means something to the both of you.
  5. Find a comfortable, quiet spot, sit down with a cup of tea, put on some music…. Revel in this moment and channel your inner artist

New in South Africa, Makedo simply redefines the meaning of exploration and creativity for both children and parents. With an innovative set of re-usable connectors, or a feature kit to get you started, you will soon view everything in your house through your new “Makedo eyes.”  From play objects to kids’ costumes, structures or arty décor, Makedo is the gateway to creating treasures from what you already have in your home and what you would normally throw away.

Suitable for children from 3 years old – and for parents of any age – Makedo will take the ho-hum out of your day, replacing it with stimulating bonding time, and the irreplaceable benefits of fun, experiential and explorative time with your youngsters, while also developing their hand-eye coordination and lateral thinking.

The Makedo connector system encourages the use of recyclable materials such as cardboard, plastic and fabric.  Now all those throw-away containers can become building blocks for new fantasy creatures, make-believe playtime or role-play.

Makedo tools are re-usable, affordable and include plastic lock-hinges, re-clip fasteners and a safe-saw, or you can buy kits to create elephants, cars, flowers and many more.

Take a flight of fancy with this flock of feathered friends!

In fact, these colorful bird specimens are not so much on the feathery side as they are papery, because these winged beauties are intricate paper sculptures, painstakingly pieced together by talented artist and illustrator Diana Beltran Herrera, from Bogota, Columbia

Herrera has named this beautiful biodegradable collection ‘Mathematics For Reality’, and has recreated her beloved birds in extreme detail, cutting and layering to perfection.

The artist studies birds in the full glory and flourish of life: “last week after working a bit with colibries, I started to look more around the world trying to find specific characteristics in certain birds that I found more relevant and that in a way came out of the prototype of some species”, she writes, “I will load information about variations I found that I find important. And (it) is nice to understand which characteristics allow then to interact in certain situations (food, behavior, habitat, relations).”

Prolific in her work, Diana Beltran Herrera has created literally hundreds of paper pals, ranging from Goldfinches in graceful flight, to nest building mates and caterpillar hunters!

Building new paper-craft birds, fish, animals and plant life almost daily, Herrera’s gallery grows and multiplies wildly, just like in nature itself.

It’s not a bird, it’s not a plane, and it’s definitely not Superman. It’s a homemade aircraft guaranteed to bring the fun of flying toys to new heights — and lengths. Its odd design helps it sail impressive distances.

You will need:

  • 2 1-inch wide stripes of card stock, one 10 inches long, one 5 inches long
  • Non-bending drinking straw
  • Tape

Instructions:

1. Tape together the ends of each strip to form a loop. Align the loops at either end of the straw and tape them in place.

2.  To send the craft flying, hold the straw in the middle, hoops up and with the smaller hoop in the front, and throw it forward like a paper airplane.
